I don’t know about you, but I am a total morning person! Especially when the sun is out. Something about a sunny morning just gives me more energy and motivates me to get out of bed and start my day. Some people like to enjoy their mornings with a cup of coffee, a nice workout or yoga session, a hearty breakfast, a brisk jog… but we all have those days where our bed just feels a little extra comfortable… and we could use 5 or 10 more minutes to sleep…

If you’re one of those people who is really not a morning person, here are a few tips to help you start your days off on the right foot!

1. WAKE UP EARLIER

Being rushed in the morning can hinder your mood the rest of the day. Waking up earlier allows you to have extra time in the morning, so there’s no need to rush. If you have a hard time getting up early, try going to bed earlier. The average adult needs about seven to nine hours of sleep per night for proper cognitive function. The optimal bedtime is between 8:00 pm and 12:00 am. In other words, as Benjamin Franklin put it, “Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

2. LET THE LIGHT IN

Having the sunshine light can make the waking up process a little easier and more natural! Open the curtains when you go to bed, to let the light be your natural alarm clock when the sun rises. The Dawn Simulation Theory states that early morning light signals have a much greater effect on the body’s biological clock than light signals given at other times during the day. If you wake up before dawn, try using a sunrise alarm or smart LED light bulbs.

3. AVOID SCREEN TIME

Checking your phone the moment you get up can hijack your morning routine. You may be tempted to check updates, but refrain. Checking one media outlet can trigger stress, as well as loss of time, and productivity. Instead of checking your phone first thing, consider more uplifting activities such as hygienic activity (brushing teeth, shower, washing face, etc.) personal study, exercise, or fixing up a nutritious breakfast.

4. EXERCISE AND STRETCH

Your body and mind have been booted down all night. Wake up your body by taking a few minutes to stretch while diffusing your favorite essential oil blend. In addition, morning exercise can increase energy and overall productivity throughout the day not to mention starting your day with physical activity is a good way to keep your stress level down throughout the day.

5. START YOUR DIFFUSER

Prep your diffuser the night before with a few drops of Citrus Bliss, Motivate, or Elevation. When you awake in the morning, turn on your diffuser, take a few deep breaths, and allow the aroma of essential oils to energize and uplift your mood for a new day.

6. MAKE YOUR BED

Start your day by accomplishing at least one goal: making your bed. This one action will provide you with the adequate motivation to continue achieving your goals throughout your day. And if the day doesn’t go as well as you’d hoped, at least you come home to a made bed!!
